Statistics Canada officially launched the 2021 Census today. It is expected the COVID-19 pandemic will have an impact on the way Canadians answer some of the census questions, including those on employment, education and commuting.

Kate Choi, a family demographer, inequality expert, and quantitative sociologist at Western University, is available to media for comment.

She says that the COVID-19 pandemic should not be a reason for Canadians not to participate in 2021 Census, in fact, the short and long-term effects of the coronavirus make the survey more important than ever to achieve an equitable recovery.

“The information that Canadians provide in the census is essential to understand the realities and needs of Canadians and its various subpopulations,” says Choi, acting director of Western’s Centre for Research on Social Inequality.

“Once collected and analyzed, the information in the census can be used to direct the resources necessary to create a healthier, more prosperous, and equitable Canadian society.”

Commentary reflects the perspective and scholarly interest of Western faculty members and is not an articulation of official university policy on issues being addressed.
